"Atargatis"- was the very first in the ancient mythology lineage of Mermaids. She was a beautiful goddess of fertility, who fell in love with a shepherd, who ,sadly, was a mere mortal. Under-estimating her powers, the goddess "Atargatis" accidentally killed her lover. In grief, she threw herself into a river hoping to transform into a fish. The Waters, however, could not hide her beauty and she was transformed instead into the very first mermaid. The mermaid legend appeared in Syria around 1000 BC. "Atargatis" is also believed to be the precursor to the Greek goddess "Aphrodite". The enduring appeal of the mythical mermaid has been transformed through the centuries. She has been worshipped, iconized, animated, painted, sculpted and if history is the measure, cultures will never tire of this beautiful romantic treasure.
This sculpture is a mixed media. I Sculpted her in clay, made a silicone mold, and then cast her in resin. She is hand-painted, dusted with bronze powder, and gold leafed.
