Scrub Jay 14"x16"Wildlife, Mixed Media This Jay builds a nest of twigs in a low tree or shrub, has three to six greenish eggs with beautiful reddish brown markings. Unlike other Jays, the Scrub Jay has no crest. In fact the genus name Aphelocoma was coined from the Greek words meaning "smooth hair". Blue above and pale gray below, it has a gray brown patch on it's back. A faint necklace of darker gray streaking separates the white throat from the darker under parts. The Scrub Jay is a year round resident of western Texas. It flies in an undulating swooping manner. With a wide range of vocalizations, some of the most common are a raspy "shreep" and a repeating "check-check-check".
